New Yahoo
:Yahoo Changes their Algorithm
New Yahoo
Some significant changes have been shown up in the Yahoo search of late that shows evidence that Yahoo is updating their index and algorithm to some good extent. One major fact has embedded this claim is that the weather report has not yet been seen to be posted by Yahoo in the Yahoo Search Blog.
It had not been formally announced by Yahoo before search engine experts like Loren Baker, Aaron Wall and several forums detected Yahoo search going through some major changes. Two of the most generic changes that Aaron experienced are –
The way how Yahoo handles 301 redirects site-wide, named botch up by Aaron.
The words in the domain name being given more weight than before.
Postscript:
Now we go with Yahoo declaring the news officially. It said that this is their first major update since they introduced the Dynamic URL Rewriting Tool and also posted the weather update up in the Yahoo blog to demonstrate the update detail. This might be sufficient enough to justify why Aaron saw the 301 redirects to change –
This is the first update after the launch of Dynamic URL Rewriting in Site Explorer. We’ve had millions of URLs rewritten based on your submissions and your sites should have seen smarter crawling from Yahoo! Slurp as a result. You will see further benefits in how your site is represented in the index from this update. Your input improves relevance and coverage for users in search results, particularly in relation to your site.

I noticed that the results are now much more similar to the results at Google. I certainly see improved relevancy and Yahoo directory listings getting less emphasis. Whether theses changes will be enough to get Google users to switch search engines only time will tell. With Yahoo’s huge market of email users they certainly have a chance to improve their market share with these changes.
