Optimize Meta Description
:for Humans!
Optimize Meta Description
I have heard a lot of people to talk about – “How to optimize Meta description for Search engines”, How to do this & that for “Search engines”…. But do we ever think of “human beings”? (e.g. People who are searching for you online).
I think its important to optimize your site for both “search engines” and also for humans like you and me. For instance, I previously heard people to criticize why some Webmasters and SEOs prefer to put their contact number in the meta description and sometimes even in the site’s title area although having a phone number present on those areas plays very little or no advantage in terms of search engine optimization.
You may be true on that part- as far as SEO is concerned, we should try to put relevant keywords in our site title & meta description. We should try to use keywords which people actually use to search for my product & services.
But lets face the fact- Search engines are getting cluttered with ’spams’. So how do a ‘human being’ actually sort out the ones which are ‘probably spam’ along with the ones which are ‘probably legit’? If you see a site like the one below – in your SERP (Search Engine Results Page), isn’t it more likely that you will consider it as ‘a legit site’? Because, the company straight away gives you their contact information and asks you to take the action (“make the call”).
And guess what, even Skype agres with me! People who has skype installed on their system sees the same result like this:
Now what happens if you click those ‘highlighted numbers’? Well I tried and it automatically opened my Skype and performed a ‘skype out‘ call to that number. And then i heard a friendly voice on the other end – “Hallo This is Bob Mutch, How May I help you?”
So what do you think about putting your phone number in the meta description now? Do you still think that it’s not worth it? Well Think Again! You are letting the user to take a ‘direct action’ and skype is helping your customer to do so with a simple click of a button. Think logically – why would you want to go and search through heeps of content where you can now talk to your service provided ‘directly’ so easily. I have tested this in Firefox and it seems that its currently working on Internet Explorer only.
So want to try out this new feature? Go to Google using IE, and search for seocompany. Then click on the highlighted number to talk to the SEO Expert – Bob Mutch. Talk to him about your site, and the way you can optimize it for the Search engines!
