Amazon.com has recently started text message shopping which is another reason why it’s brick-and-mortar competitors should still have some fear of the Web. Amazon TextBuyIt is a new service that lets shoppers compare prices and buy things with a few quick taps on their cell phones.

This new service which was launched this Tuesday, lets people text the name of a product, its description or its UPC or ISBN to 262966 (that’s “Amazon” on the keypad) from anywhere their cell phones work — even where you are inside a physical stores.

If Amazon server finds your item, the service will return two results at a time. Shoppers can immediately buy one of the first two the selections by texting back the number “1″ or “2,” or they can ask for more result by texting the letter “M.”

“With today’s launch of TextBuyIt, any Amazon.com customer can now use any mobile device to shop and buy from Amazon.com, at anytime, anywhere they are,” said Howard Gefen, Director of Amazon Mobile Payments. “With TextBuyIt, if you’re walking out of a concert and want to buy a CD from the artist you just saw, or if you’re at dinner and a friend tells you about a great book you should read, all you have to do is get out your mobile device, send a text message to Amazon, reply to the response, confirm your order, and your item will be on its way. It’s incredibly simple and convenient.”

If a customer is purchasing something for the first time using this new TextBuyIt service, they will be asked for their e-mail address and shipping ZIP code they use for their Amazon.com account. With this information, Amazon will create customers’ default settings for payment, shipping address and shipping speed which includes the 2-Day shipping for Amazon Prime members.
